Urogynecology

Female urology and pelvic floor health

Urinary problems, cystitis, intimate discomfort and pain during sex often share a common origin in the pelvic floor and in the changes of different life stages. Urogynecology looks at them together, with an attentive and discreet approach.

Who it's for
Women of all ages

What it is

The pelvic floor is the group of muscles and tissues that supports the bladder, uterus and rectum. Pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, high-impact sport or constipation can weaken it or, on the contrary, make it too tense.

Urogynecology deals with urinary and pelvic floor problems in women, working with gynecologists and other specialists when needed. Talking to a female specialist in a private setting can make things easier.

  • if needed, further tests such as uroflowmetry or urodynamic testing

Treatment options

Care is built around each patient:

  1. Rehabilitation

Pelvic floor retraining with guided exercises, biofeedback and electrical stimulation.

  2. Local and medical treatments

For vaginal dryness, recurrent cystitis and overactive bladder, chosen according to age, medical history and personal preference.

  3. Minimally invasive surgery

In selected cases of stress incontinence.

Frequently asked questions

Do urologists treat women too?

Yes. Urology covers the urinary tract of both men and women: cystitis, incontinence, stones and voiding problems. Urogynecology is the area that focuses specifically on women's urinary and pelvic floor health.

I have pain during sex. Who should I see?

Pain during sex often has several overlapping causes: dryness, inflammation, cystitis or tension in the pelvic floor muscles. Talking to a specialist is the first step: a careful assessment helps identify the causes and the right approach, often together with a gynecologist.

Is vaginal dryness only a menopause issue?

It is common during menopause, but it can also appear after childbirth, while breastfeeding, with certain treatments or during stressful periods. Besides the discomfort, it can make cystitis and pain during sex more likely. Several treatments are available and can be chosen with your specialist.
